In the service industry of WordPress website development and WordPress training and coaching there are many opportunities for personal growth and this year has not been the exception.

It’s been a roller coaster ‘E’ ticket ride (remember when all the best rides at Disneyland were ‘E’ tickets) of professional triumphs and yes, a few gnarly bumps along the way. The Universe has a way of throwing those little curve balls at you to keep you on your toes!

As a WordPress developer, trainer and blogging coach, I would like to personally convey how grateful I am for the opportunity to work with so many exceptional individuals. Thank you for stretching me beyond my comfort zone, inspiring me to keep on learning and to think outside of the box. I hope that I was able to give you as much as you have given me in gifts of personal growth.

Get Found Now – Growing and Morphing into the New

For close to nine years now, Get Found Now has also been growing and morphing into the new. It’s been a journey of constant change and restructuring in order to keep pace with the demands of increased business and the responsibilities that come with it. Trust me when I say that Michael (my life and business partner) and I are not complaining about business – we are extremely grateful.

However, what we humbly realized this year was that we are not omnipotent and can not be all things to all people all the time. On several occasions, we’ve had to take a step back to shore up the corners and patch up a few holes in our ever-evolving game plan. We’ve also had to learn how to set better boundaries so that we can be the best we can be for our clients, our family and ourselves.

In closure, Michael and I would like to personally thank all of the incredible people that crossed our path this year and made us better for it. We are looking forward to the ride of continued growth and success in the coming year and have several exciting new ventures in the works.

Here’s to all of you that made it happen for us (hope we didn’t miss anyone here):

Debbie Maxwell (GFN adores you), Jane Peters (lots of love and gratitude), Tagrid Shunia (you rock and GFN LOVES Ya), Jim McCormack (one smart guy), Josie Nigro (wise and wonderful), Bill Gassett (awesome dude and GFN family), Gina Lemos (‘Soul sister’), Loreena Yeo (DIY hands-on kind of gal and love that signature hook), Maureen Mercier (WE LOVE YOU), Maureen Fukumoto (Sooooo nice to work with), Marva Goldsmith (exceptional woman and a pleasure), Charles McDonald (exchanging knowledge with Charles is a total gift) Bill Gillhespy (awesome cool dude and my spell check hero), Terri Poehler (SWEET HEART and GFN family), Candy Miles-Crocker (one amazing woman), Charita Cadenhead (one SMART cookie), Maya Swami (EXCEPTIONAL woman and GFN family), Carla Jacobs (strong warrior and fabulous blogger – “Sell the sizzle”), Eugene Adan (cool dude and a pleasure – GFN family), Melissa Brown (an absolute delight, rockin blogger), Jim Braun (totally awesome dude ), Melissa Zavala (smart, focused and driven), Kurt Rochilitz (bringing it in for 2012!), Diane Osowiecki (GFN LOVES Diane ‘O’), Victor Yepello and Ron Jessor (Victor/Victoria, the dynamic duo! – it was a BLAST), Jenny Durling (one smart lady), Patricia Harris (smart with amazing aesthetic sensibilities), Lanre Folayan (2012 – let’s go!), Scott Elwell (a pleasure) Neal Pender (a DIY, hands-on kind of guy), Robert Rudder (getting it done for 2012! ), DTI Data (Thank you Dave for the amazing journey), Sally Null (a class act – so professional and cool), Sherri Wellborn (wish they could all be like you), Wayne Pruner (easy going guy and a pleasure), Brenda Mullen (smart, funny, focused and cool – you go girl!), (Randall Rothfus (totally nice and a pleasure to work with), Anita Clark (You ROCK Anita!), Sheila Stephenson (a sweetheart), Leilani Souza (so smart and focused), Thom Abbot (nice, nice guy), Tom Styne (bringing in 2012 with a bang!), Gordon Sloan (totally nice human being), Linda Seaton and Judy (so professional and an absolute pleasure to work with), Eva Tennent (so creative – 2012 here we come!), Blake Lewis (a pleasure), and Chip Hurst (one smart, DIY kind of guy).

Blog posts focused on one topic with proper formatting are more effective for people and SEO. The last thing you want to do is overload readers and search engines with too much information on multiple topics in one post. Rather than throwing the entire ”kitchen sink” (everything you know) into one post, a better strategy is to break up larger topics into focused, formatted, easy-to-digest, bite-size chunks or multiple posts and spread them out over time.

If you want people and search engines to find and focus on your post, it needs to be mono-focused and formatted correctly. For example, the topic of SEO blogging has many divergent sub-topics and if tried to cover it all in one post, most readers would do a 360 head spin and their eyeballs would fall out due to information overload. The post would also probably die a painful death in the index because search engines would be unable to acertain what the main topic of the post was about.

“Rules” about SEO Blog Post Length and Optimization

There really are no hard and fast rules about blog post length. First of all, Google loves content, so don’t be too concerned about writing “too much” in one post as long as what you are blogging about stays on-topic. With a longer post, you can break down the main topic into sub-topics, just make sure that you don’t wander off in multiple directions. If your post is about this, that and the other thing, it’s very difficult to get search engine placement for anything!

Instead of going on and on in one post, addding a list of “related posts” at the bottom of your posts gives readers the opportunity to venture further into your main topic and offers a quick navigation to previous posts they may not find otherwise. It’s also very good for SEO to link up related posts. I tend to go a bit “overboard” in the related post links department because I have written numerous posts about SEO blogging that tie in together and I want readers to find them all.

When it comes to blog post length and optimization, the general rule of thumb is one or two keywords/search terms per 450 to 500 words, not including your signature/tag line. Aim for only one keyword/search term with shorter posts. You can repeat the keyword/search term 3 times within the post including using it in a heading tag. Basically, the longer the post, the more opportunity you have for optimization, search engine placement and garnering “topic authority” for your post.

Overcoming Information Overkill with Proper SEO Blog Post Formatting

The truth is that if people are intrigued enough to read past your post title, they will first quickly scan your post before actually reading it. Therefore, you want to format your posts for easy scanning and visually compartmentalize blocks of content, a big turn off for Internet users. The use of eye-catching, optimized images, search term rich heading tags that support the main title, ordered (numbered) and unordered (bulleted) lists are effective ways to SEO format and break up blocks of content for your readers.

Proper formatting helps people focus onyour blog posts and also helps you get search engine placement for the topics you write about. I hope the above SEO blogging tips give some structure to your creative flow and remember, write for people, then optimize for search engines – always in that order!

Do you sometimes find yourself sitting at your computer, hands poised upright ready to type, yet nothing insightful, creative or amazing comes to mind? Well, maybe that’s your clue that it’s NOT the best time to push out a powerful, SEO business blog post that will not only grab your readers attention, but also get search engine placement for the topic you’re writing about.

After a taxing day doing all the other things you have to do, it can be a real challenge to reset and move into marketing and business promotion blog writing mode. As leaders, experts and entrepreneurs, we are always on go and when we try and force SEO business blog posts, we can easily miss the mark with our readers and waste our valuable time.

SEO business blogging is not the same kind of stuff one writes about when ”pleasure blogging.” Keep the easy, no strings attached, non-business blogging separate, when your only intention is about shooting the breeze and connecting with fellow readers. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this type of blogging if you have the time and desire.

Index garnering, search engine placement maximizing, lead generation and traffic conversion, SEO business blogging demands a much higher level, full-tilt boogy approach. I am not saying that connecting with your readers should ever be second fiddle to search engine placement. On the contrary, if your message is forced and does not engage, all the SEO in the world will prove useless for traffic conversion. The message takes precedence over SEO, but it has to be there.

A Blog Post Needs SEO if You Want to “Get Found Online”

Don’t think for one minute that writing a fabulous blog post is going to get you results if you don’t incorporate SEO into the equation. SEO is NOT about “keyword stuffing” by the way. It’s a combination of SEO elements within your text, utilizing a great blogging platform like WordPress and behind-the-scenes search engine optimization that get your posts found in the index. So, don’t throw out the SEO baby with the bath water because you need it if you want search engine placement – that’s a fact!

Throw out Set Blogging Schedules and Quotas

Many dedicated bloggers commit to staying on a “set schedule” to pump out “X” amount of blog posts per week or month. I say, replenishing what you’ve given out during the day takes absolute precedence over pumping out a two-bit, mediocre, forced blog post when that is clearly the last thing you want to be doing. Writing from a blog post quota stance is very demanding and won’t necessarily translate into a shining star post that engages your readers. Isn’t that what you are really striving for?

As a WordPress SEO blog coach, I am the first to commend folks with blogging dedication and fortitude, but there are times when it’s best to walk away and wait until the creatice juices are flowing, when the mind is truly ready to give at it’s best. Otherwise, all you’ll end up with is a contrived, disjointed and uninspired post, no matter how hard you work at it. And the more you ”work at it,” the worse it gets!

The best SEO business blog posts come from a place of enjoyment and free flow because when you are in the right creative space, words spring forth effortlessly and your personality shines through. That is how you will connect with your readers. Don’t even think about SEO when you are in “the flow.” That comes later, after you’ve fleshed out your masterpiece. Put some space between writing and SEO mechanics. You will find that it’s much easier to optimize a post once you are no longer married to it!

Let’s put to rest several misconceptions about adding Google embedded content into your WordPress site. I have seen many ”WordPress Experts” say that Google Maps, You Tube Videos and Feedburner RSS content has no real SEO value. This article is written to de-bunk those fallacies!

Why Google Maps Rock

Google Maps are an IFRAME and many so-called SEO experts say to shy away from IFRAMES. In fact, the majority will tell you that IFRAMES are not spidered by Googlebot and all of their friends. This is true to an extent, but it all depends upon “which” URL the IFRAME is linking to. If you are linking to an IFRAME that is a Google property, such as “Google Maps”, there is no way that Google doesn’t understand that the page or post you are writing isn’t about a specific local.

Think About It…….. Google considers itself the AUTHORITY on “everything.” If you are embedding a link to a specific geo-targeted area through Google Maps, you are now relating to the ultimate authority – Google. Most IFRAME results are ignored, but not when they are RELEVANT to the search. Google wants relevant results and by linking to their own maps and info, you are giving them what they want. Believe me when I tell you, Google feels it is the authority on EVERYTHING!!!!!!

Linking to and embedding Google content is a no-brainer. If you are dependent on natural or organic search engine placement, how can you NOT give Google what it wants? They wouldn’t have made it so “easy” to embed their content if they didn’t want website owners to use it!

For those of you unfamiliar with Search Engine strategies, natural placement has much different rules than Pay-Per-Click or other “keyword” driven campaigns. Organic or natural placement is based upon a broader scale, mainly topics. Google, Bing and Ask are all based upon “topic authority,” not keywords. (If you are wondering why I didn’t include Yahoo, two months ago, Bing started to serve Yahoo’s organic results).

In the real estate SEO landscape, topic authority for a specific region is of tantamount importance. Having embedded Google content to build your authority for a specific region is the best way to give your site the same authority. Linking to other authority sites such as the Mayors office, Chamber of Commerce or the city website will only add to that authority.

Google “WANTS” you to add their content to your website, which is why they made it so easy to do so. Nothing has more authority in Google’s mind, than their own properties!

Embedding Your Tube Videos and Linking To a You Tube Channel

You Tube videos are another point of contention among the “experts.” The fact is that those videos are just another IFRAME. When you embed a video, it acts the same way as a Google Map does. The best scenario is to create a You Tube Channel which will allow you to create a Google video page that will help build your authority. It is imperative to properly name the file to reflect your topics and to fill out the title, description and tags. The link from your You Tube channel to your website is a link that “carries weight in Google.”

Users of your website will love videos, that is a fact, but you need to keep in mind that Google is a computer and can’t watch the video. Google relies upon you to describe what the video is about. We like to take it a step further and teach our clients to not only post videos, but explain in text what the video is about. If you are embedding a video within your blog, it is key to add a description of what the video is about.

RSS Feeds and Feedburner

Another misconception is that your site doesn’t benefit from Feedburner, a Google property. I know that it sometimes has issues, but Feedburner’s pros outweigh the cons. Feedburner allows you to have a newsletter that goes to your subscribers. It also allows users to add YOUR content to their Google home page. It is pretty easy to also add your RSS content on your website. This is important if you have more than one website. If you have multiple websites, using Feedburner to tie them together is a solid SEO play. We have had major success using Feedburner across multiple domains.

Truth be told, it really doesn’t matter how long visitors stay on your site, how many page views you get per visitor or how many visitors you get per day. At the end of the day, what does matter is that you get found online and that you convert your traffic to leads.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave in the Himalayas for the past several years, most folks now realize that blogging on a self-hosted WordPress site is the fastest way to get search engine placement and keep it.

That being said, the best WordPress SEO blog design on the planet is not going to get you top placement or traffic that converts to leads. And the only way you will get both placement and conversion results is if you are SEO blogging effectively.

Content Focused SEO Blogging

Great SEO blogging actually starts with the willingness to put aside time in your busy schedule to free up your intellect and tap into your ‘inner creative writer.’ I call it free flowing or brain dumping. That’s where your head should be at before you even begin to think about keywords/search terms (enough or too many), link percentages, meta tags, heading tags, SEO formatting and everything else pertaining to how to get found online.

You first must be willing to give yourself the time, space and permission to write freely so that what you are saying is worth people reading. A blog post with the perfect percentage of keywords, links and tags means absolutely nothing if you haven’t hit a home run with the way you have presented your message.

Content Focused SEO blog Coaching and WordPress Training

The type of SEO blog coaching I offer is different than your average SEO blog coach. First of all, I teach WordPress SEO blogging because it is the best content management system to blog on and performs in the index. My emphasis is on engaging your readers with great content. I then teach you how to add SEO formatting and mehcanics for search engine placement – always in that order.

Yes, you might get visitors to your site with left brain Google algorithm knowledge, link percentage statistics and search term perfection, but who really cares if once you get found online, your site visitors are turned off by your perfectly optimized SEO rubbish. Content must alwasy come first or your site visitors will leave in a wink of an eye.

SEO blog coaching is an adjunct to our WordPress Boot Camp Training for those who want to kick up their SEO blogging to the next level. If you are a seasoned blogger and are looking to amp up your placement in the index - ‘white hat’ practices only – WordPress blog coaching can take you to the next level.

WordPress Blog Coaching

Together, we devise a content plan of specific search terms for your niche market along with a keyword analysis. We then deconstruct 3 – 4 post and/or pages (client supplies content) and reconstruct them utilizing correct SEO and usability formatting. You write engaging content for PEOPLE and I teach you how to optimize and format your content for search engines – always in that order!

Most of you already know how to write about your target market- it’s optimization and specific SEO formatting that may need a bit of tweaking. As far as I am concerned, you are the expert in your field and your content is sacred ground. My job is to teach you how to get search engine placement in the index for the topics you write about utilizing good SEO practices. Trust me, getting search engine placement is not rocket science when you are blogging on WordPress!

Get Found Now has tested many types of content management systems to ascertain which is best suited for SEO. We looked at Joomla, ModX, Drupal, TypePad, PHP Nuke and WordPress. Each system has its good points and its bad points. They all support RSS, video and discussion. For advanced news type sites Joomla and WordPress were the clear winners. For blogging we liked WordPress the best. For overall functionality ModX had the most advanced back end, but overall was a little hard to customize. They all have templates or themes, but WordPress was the most supported and had the most options for overall support and customization.

What Is The Best CMS For SEO

Of all the systems we tested WordPress was the leader in the majority of important categories like SEO and usability. The problem with WordPress is its self-titled moniker “just another wordpress weblog”. They sell themselves short by calling themselves a weblog or blog. It is much more advanced than a simple blog. WordPress is a powerful SEO tool, built to succeed in the search engines. It is easy to use and easy to customize. Our themes are laid out to get the most out of your content and notify the search engines whenever you add or modify content.

Why WordPress Does So Well In The SERPS

The reason WordPress dominates the search engines the way it does is because of the communication that happens at the most base levels. Through XML RPC and XML Sitemaps the search engines and directories are notified immediately when you create a new post or page. I can’t stress enough how powerful this function is. Once Google has identified the topics that your site has authority for, your site will get spidered as often as your content is created. The most important part of search engine optimization is the content. Writing quality content will get other sites to link to your site and motivate your visitors to leave comments and discuss your topics. If you need help getting started, take a look at our Content Creation and Writing Services.

WordPress is built for discussion. If you can create a word document, you can write a WordPress post or page. One of the first mistakes that a new user makes is over tagging a post. Putting a post in too many categories or adding too many tags to it. It is best to be brief in your tags and comments. We use categories and tags for organization and usability.

Search engine optimization of static pages is a subject that is covered ad nausea. How about those of us that have more dynamic Internet presences? I personally prefer the WordPress system to any other type of content management system, and believe me I have tried them all. Unless you have an e-commerce site with hundreds or thousands of products, more than likely you could use WordPress as your content management system.

Using WordPress Posts and Pages For SEO

When you have WordPress installed either as a standalone application or part of a website, your options for SEO are increased big time. In my post WordPress SEO Server Side I explain the basics of WordPress and the importance of a good theme. Now that it is up, what do you do?

The first steps involve the sites content. You must have a plan for at least the first 20 posts or pages. There is a difference between WordPress posts and pages. A page is pretty much the same as a standard web page. It takes longer to get into the SERPs, but also has more staying power. A post can get you instant gratification, but unless the post is commented on frequently, it won’t stay in the SERP’s for long.

Creating Keyword Intensive Pages

If your site is specific to a set of keywords, the best game plan is to create keyword heavy PAGES. I have found that an optimized page other than the home page can rank highly for about 3 keywords or keyword phrases. The key is to use the keyword phrase in both the URL (in WordPress that would be the slug which is best formatted in lowercase with words separated by a dash, i.e. keyword1-keyword2-etc) and the Page title. In the slug or URL field do not use noise words like the, and, or, a, etc.

WordPress SEO is pretty basic on the client side if your system is set up properly with the right plugins. You have your title and slug with the keywords you are promoting on the Page. The first sentences should be a description of the content on the page. You need at least 1 or 2 paragraphs to start off the page prior to using H2 tags. The H2 tag should also have a keyword phrase in it. If you are optimizing for multiple phrase, then use multiple H2 tags, but always have at least 2 paragraphs between H2 tags. If the keyword phrase you are promoting has sub-topics use H3 tags to break down and isolate the different phrases.

It is important not to spam the page, and to have as much keywords that make sense. It is always good to rotate between <strong> and <em> tags to bold and italicize your keywords and phrases. This shows the spiders that the page is an authority on the keywords mentioned.

By creating Pages that are keyword heavy, you now have a base for deep link navigation that will help you gain authority in the search engines and give your users an idea what your site is about. The Pages are the foundation for getting started with WordPress SEO.

Promoting WordPress Pages With Posts

Once you have your primary keywords within Pages, you can now start writing WordPress Posts to promote them. During the WordPress set up you should have created at least the most basic categories to put your pages in. If you haven’t then now is the time to create your categories.

Most new blogs have a growing period from inception to getting regular readers and subscribers. That being said the first posts are probably not going to be consumed by the masses, which is why it is good to use them to promote your optimized WordPress Pages.

Setting up a WordPress Post for SEO is basically the same as it is for a Page except that you also will have tags and keywords. The same principles of title and slug remain the same, use your keywords in both. Once you have created enough posts that link to your pages, your blatant self promotion is over and you are ready to get busy writing your articles and setting up your subscription base. If you are unfamiliar with syndication read my post RSS Real Simple Syndication Overview.

WordPress SEO is a big topic and I will be covering it over the next 2 weeks, please leave any questions as comments on this post. I am putting together a plugin package along with an instructional video on how to install and configure the SEO plugins I use. I hope to have that done by the end of next week.
