As an experienced SEO business blogging coach and SEO content writer, I know how to get top search engine placement and topic authority for the SEO content that I write. However, my real expertise is what I offer other bloggers who read my posts and learn how to be better at SEO business blogging themselves.
My aim is not to impress people with my SEO blogging knowledge nor do I compete with the self-proclaimed “SEO Experts” on the Internet, and believe me, there are a lot of them. I speak the language of bloggers, a.k.a. real people and because I understand the SEO business blogging mindset, that’s who I write for.
A lot of folks tell me they read through my posts a couple of times and take what is relevant for their business model, which works just fine for me. But, I can tell you one thing for certain, if you follow my tips on SEO business blogging, you will be successful at getting top search engine placement for your SEO business blog posts or SEO marketing articles, as I like to call them.
I get a lot of comments from people with questions about SEO blogging – my specialty. I like the after-post discussion (banter) and and try to answer as many on-topic questions as I can. The after-post discussion is often better than the post itself and adds to topic authority, which is the very thing I want the search engines to recognize that I have. Answering comments is good for SEO and helps promote your business – no doubt about it.
Below is a compilation of common SEO blogging questions from the Active Rain community (Real Estate) who commented on my ActiveRain Blog about SEO blogging. I have added more information as well as relevant article links to my previous answers where I thought it would be helpful.
1). “What article directories should I reblog on for real estate?”
I primarily use two article directories for real estate. Active Rain is of course the BEST for networking, broadening your reader base, branding your name and generating traffic back to your own blog/website. Associated Content is also a great platform to publish posts on because Google sees it as a news source and your posts show up within minutes in the index.
There are many article marketing services out there, but for real estate, I would stick with AC and AC, especially if you are currently blogging on a WordPress system. SEO article marketing should always start with quality, optimized articles written on your own blog first, then republish on other directories – you don’t want to give away your topic authority and SEO to article directories. 2). “What’s the difference between having a WordPress blog and an ActiveRain blog?”
From an SEO standpoint, you are in control with a self-hosted WordPress blog. WordPress is extremely powerful and comes with many built-in SEO features. You can also give WordPress a boost with SEO plug-ins like a Google XML site map that notifies the search engines every time you update your site or publish an article. WordPress also comes with an Update Service that updates other ping services every time you publish an article. WordPress blog posts are not dependent on the “spider crawling and indexing old fashion way.” Therefore, it takes less time for your posts to reach more people. For more information about this, read “SEO WordPress – Kicking it Up to Notches Unknown!” Last but not least, a WordPress blog post with good SEO and topic authority will tend to stick around longer in the index.
3). “I have never used WordPress. Is Permalink a specific feature of that program? I had never heard the term before.”
A permalink is just another name for URL or slug. It’s a static address (link) to a blog post or page. Here’s an example – Permalink: http://www.getfoundnow.com/seo-blogging-questions-answers
4). “I sometimes forget about the link to the title and use cutesy stuff which impacts readership too.”
A lot of bloggers on ActiveRain use catchy titles that grab your attention and make you want to read their posts, which is great for networking, branding your name and getting ActiveRain members to visit your website or blog.
However, those same posts may not be so fortunate in the actual search engine results pages (SERPs). Catchy titles void of SEO may show up in the index, but its highly unlikely they will get any placement for the actual topic you are writing about.
The <title 1 tag> is one of the first items search engines look at to ascertain what a post or page is about. Therefore, it’s a good idea to include in the title whatever search term you are going after in the text. In this post, for example, I want topic authority for “SEO Blogging,” which is in the title and also bolded throughout the post.
5). “I’m a little leery of changing posts that are already indexed and complete. One of the unwritten rules of blogging is that changes should be minimal, mainly for correcting errors, and the best practice seems to be to include the changes at the end in a paragraph headed UPDATE: I find it much more effective to just write another post on the same topic. You are going to get more attention from Google and other search engines from creating additional content and you can link back to your previous post. Look at some of the awesome short-sale bloggers on this site (AR). They are always creating new posts rather than just updating their old ones. My two cents.”
I highly recommend updating previous posts AND writing new posts. I’m all for pushing as much quality content out the door as possible – the more you feed the search engines the better. However, updating older posts that need updating can only benefit you – it’s not a waste of time. And, if you have an XML Google site map, every time you update content on your site (posts or pages) it notifies the search engines so that your site is crawled..
Don’t be afraid to go back in and give your older posts a face lift with fresh content. You can send them back out through your RSS feed and/or republish them on a directory like ActiveRain or Associated Content with a fresh title. It’s not a good idea to delete older posts that are helping your search engine placement and authority for certain search terms, even if they are outdated or stale. And if you have deep link navigation, deleting posts will cause broken links. Updating and recycling previously published posts that contain dated or obsolete information and need updating is good for SEO.
6). “How do search engines know to re-index your changes?”
You might want to read this article: “SEO WordPress – Kicking it Up to Notches Unknown! ” Excerpt…One WordPress plug-in we highly recommend is the Google XML Sitemap, which notifies the major search engines whenever you update your site with fresh content. WordPress also has a default notification system called Ping-O-Matic that automatically notifies popular Update Services that you’ve updated your site by sending a XML-RPC ping.”
7). “I have a question regarding the words you have in bold, are you doing anything special to them that makes them bold? From what I understand, those are keyword phrases you are using, but do you just make them bold in the AR editor by changing the font with the “B” in the tool bar? Does Google and other search engines pick up on it easier when they are in bold?”
Bolded search terms or keywords let the search engines know what your page is about. A keyword or keyword phrase is what a web user types into the search engines in order to find relevant web pages. “do you just make them bold in the AR editor by changing the font with the “B” in the tool bar?” - Yes. 8). “I discovered yesterday: when I write a WP PAGE about a listing and include the price in the title, I can’t ever change that. Even if I update the title and content with reduced price, my original title (a file name) will show the original price on my “listings” drop-down menu. So, I had to make a new page with no price in the title. I didn’t delete the original page, but it’s not checked so it won’t be visible. Have I disturbed my permalink?”
I am a little confused about the question, but I’m going to address the topic of permalinks and title changes and maybe your question will get answered midstream. Changing the title of a post/listing will not affect the permalink. Change the permalink/URL/slug and your post/listing will show up as an “error” in the index. Eventually it will disappear.
As you stated, listing prices change, so they are best kept out of the URL or permalink. In general, don’t put anything in a URL that isn’t static or may change, such as prices and dates or that won’t help your SEO, such as “noise words” – and, a, of, the, is, etc.
9). General answer for comments and confusion about permalinks
For those of you who are confused about permalinks on your ActiveRain blog, no worries. ActiveRain doesn’t allow you to physically alter the permalink/url/slug. You can change the title on your AC posts without affecting the permalink. You would basically have to delete your AC post entirely and then republish it in order for the permlink to be changed. WordPress is a different story because you can alter the permalink/url/slug of a published post and when you do, the original post is gone from the index. (The next question/answer talks about 301 redirects).
10). If there is a situation where one feels it is necessary to change a permalink, do you think it can be done with a redirection plugin?”
(This does not apply to ActiveRain blogs) If you have access to your root directory then it’s best to use a 301 redirect, which tells the search engines that the URL has been permanently moved or redirected. With the appropriate system, this is easily done with the .htaccess. The code is simple: redirect 301 url.htm.http://domain.com/newurl.htm. If access to the root is unavailable or your site is on Windows, there are meta tags that can also be used.
