ABB Adds New Jobs to the Charlotte, NC Area
GOOD NEWS on the employment front for the Charlotte area this week! On Thursday, Governer Bev Perdue announced that ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will build a new plant in Huntersville, NC and will be looking to fill 100 positions.
The Swedish–Swiss company also plans to add an additional 30 jobs at its North American headquarters in wake County, NC.
ABB is expanding in order to meet the growing needs of power infrastructure and renewable energy. The company will invest $90 million in the new Huntersville facility, which is slated to be operating by early 2012.
The plant will manufacture high-voltage and extra-high-voltage cables used for improved power transmission over long distances, while lowering environmental impact.
Engineering, Technical & Production Jobs for the Charlotte Area
ABB will hire a mix of 100 engineering, technical and production positions for the new Huntersville plant. The overall average wage for the new jobs will be around $64,008, which is higher than the average in Mecklenburg County ($48,776) and in Wake County ($42,692).
ABB is the world’s largest provider of transmission and distribution equipment and technology for the power grid. The company operates in around 100 countries worldwide and employs about 117,000 people.
ABB currently employees around 770 people state-wide in manufacturing and other facilities including their Corporate Research Center, Power Products and Power Systems Divisions, all of which are located on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University.
The company will receive state grant money for the project from the Job Development Investment Grant program and One North Carolina Fund. ABB is eligible to receive a grant equal to 67% of the state personal income withholding taxes for each of the 9 years the company meets annual performance targets, up to $2.149 million maximum benefits.
“We have a very good and long standing relationship with the sate of North Carolina,” said Enrique Santacana, region manager for ABB in North America. “The proximity to transportation, top-notch engineering and an attractive living environment made Huntersville an excellent choice for this facility,” Santacana went on to say.
“Creating jobs is my top priority and this multi-county investment and expansion by ABB is a win for the regions and our state,” said North Carolina Bev Perdue.
