“Expert” is a Matter of Opinion or Fact?

"Expert" is a Matter of Opinion The word “expert” has definitely become a loaded gun word on the Internet and quite frankly, expert is a matter of opinion that rests in the eye of the beholder.

A lot of people call themselves an “expert,” so much so that it has become a greatly overused and abused buzz word that turns people off.

That being said, if you have years of experience and genuine expertise in your respective field, are you not an expert at what you do? I would have to say YES.

An expert is someone that is a reliable source of information with abilities and skills recognized by the public and their peers, based on experience. It is about knowing what you know and not about reporting or rehashing what other people know and have already said.

Expert has Become A Four Letter Word Online

In my book, I have no real problem with folks calling themselves an “expert,”  if in fact they truly are one. E-x-p-e-r-t spelled out is a composite of 6 benign letters formed into a word, which has become a 4 letter word due to overuse  and negative connotation.

Are you brave enough to call yourself an “expert,” as in knowledgeable, experienced and skillful in whatever it is that you do?  Well, be prepared to hear about it from those who may not want you to have all the kudos that come with that expert title and status.  And it doesn’t matter if it is an accurate assessment of your true talents, value or worth.

Urban Dictionary Definition of “Expert” Love this One

(1.)Someone Who thinks they knew how to do something but actually just screwed everything up. (2.)Someone who goes into a serious explanation of doing something fairly simple or unimportant like how to drive a bumper car. When something just doesn’t work how you want it to. (4.) an Idiot…Nub

Real experts are not glory seekers who arrogantly pontificate about what they know or think they know online or offline in order to draw attention to themselves.  True experts are busy, don’t care and trust me, others can see right through the thin veneer of pontification void of merit.  Experts also don’t self-efface. They simply prefer to keep themselves humble because it’s the highest place to remain neutral, exceptional and be oneself.

Humility comes from a wellspring of authority that bubbles up from within. It is not contrived, distinctly palatable and sensed by others.  True experts go about their business as usual with confidence, while imparting what they know freely to others.  There is no agenda. It is what it is and they feel compelled to give what they know.

Calling Yourself An Expert Online – Get Ready

These days, you are asking for a tongue whoopin if you call yourself an expert online because the word has been given a bad rap.  That being said, don’t get all “anti-expert” online blasting those who call themselves an expert publicly, even when you know they are not.  Knee jerk reactions like that will only make you look small, competitive  and down right petty. My advice is to not go there,  no matter what it takes, hold back and leave it alone.

You don’t have to shoot your brothers and sisters in the foot when they make outlandish, ridiculous expert claims that rub you the wrong way because they will do it all on their own.  I say, the best defense is no offense and go about your business as usual. And who really gives a damn about what the other guy is doing anyway?  Don’t go there.

“Guru” – Yes It Does Make Me Cringe a Little

I have to admit  there is one proclamation of greatness that does make me cringe a little and that is when someone refers to themselves as a“Guru.”  Sorry, that  level of self importance is way too arrogant and a bit hard to stomach as far as I’m concerned.

I found this in Wikipedia and I have to agree:

“ In Western usage, the meaning of “guru” has been extended to cover anyone who acquires followers, especially by exploiting their naivete, due to the inflationary use of the term in new religious movements.[1

Here is what the Urban Dictionary has to say about Guru:

Guru is a learned man, He shares his knowledge and enlighten all ignorant and works for the mass uplifting of the society by imparting knowledge. One who helps others in need with out reward because he is above that. Gurus: a frequent or favorite companion who causes extreme love and adoration in the heart of their admirers.

It is an awfully big responsibility to call yourself a “guru,” don’t you think?  I personally head straight for the hills and stay clear of anyone that professes to be a “Guru” of anything.  One thing I have learned over my 52 years of living is to never, and I mean never, give my personal power over to anyone. I’ll take a bona fide, made in good faith, without fraud or deceit, expert any day. See you later self-proclaimed online Gurus. I’m OK right where I’m at right now, thank you very much.
