If you have been in the Internet business as long as I have, then you know that domain extensions come and go without making a dent in the rankings of .com and .org websites. The .net extension has performed the best out of all the non dot com domains, but clearly not anywhere near a .com.

Enter the .pro domain extension. I haven’t seen as much talk about it as I expected even though it has been out for months. I suppose that professionals online don’t feel it will crack the dominance of traditional .com’s. The fact is .pro will not only rank high, but has the potential to take rankings away from the vaunted .com domain extension.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore .PRO Domain Extensions

If you are a professional and have a brick and mortar business, you absolutely must grab your .pro domain. I was astonished to see how many important domains were still available. You must have a business license to keep your domain. If you don’t provide them with a business license along with the licensing entity within 44 days you will loose the domain and they won’t refund the money. Since .pro domains are not available through wholesalers like godaddy, you will have to use Network Solutions or another registrar. You can get a list of .pro registrars here.

Fell free to leave a comment if you have any questions about .pro domains. I have 2 sites that have just been released and will keep everyone updated on their progress. Once they are in the SERPS I will put up links to them.

This is the first time I have heard of pro domains. I don’t know if I will ever need one but who knows?

The seem like a great idea, but what type of professional do you have to be? Your post said you need a business license, does that include something like an occupational license for my grocery store or are .Pro extensions only for professionals like doctors or lawyers?
I’ve never seen them in any Ad or anywhere, are people really using them?

    Jacob,

I used my occupational license to get mine. Even though they have been around for a while, not many people are using them. I was able to obtain some serious domains that have very valuable keywords. I just installed a WordPress system on one of them and will keep everyone informed as to how well it does. I believe that these domains will rank high especially with the new changes Google has made to its index. I will be releasing an article on Monday that explains these changes based on what people like Matt Cutts said at procom last week. You can see changes now if you search for service related terms. On the top right hand side of the SERP it even tells you that the results are based on the geographical location of your IP address!

Thank you, Michael. Does anyone know of any articles or links with details about these .pro extensions?

I am really proud that .pro is getting recogonised among professionals. It is indeed a great news.

It would be great if everyone with a .pro domain could drop a comment in here with their URL’s and keywords so we can all track the search engine placement of .pro websites.

Do you also have information on .me domain whether it would rank high close to .com? This is my first time to have heard of .pro.

  12. Common Domain Extensions on December 1st, 2008 4:15 pm

I have never heard about .pro websites, or actually seen one yet. - So it can’t be THAT good by today.
Probably because very few have actually started to use them.

    A few questions though…
Does a .pro domain rank better than your own country extension for your own country?
For example a .no ranks really well in Norway, as well as you need to have an organization number to register one.

    2. Do you know any places with official information about this?

    3. Would you recommend/is it possible to register a .pro domain for internet only businesses?

    Thanks,
    - Peter

Probably just not popular yet. *.pro could be useful eg semi.pro
