Blog posts focused on one topic with proper formatting are more effective for people and SEO. The last thing you want to do is overload readers and search engines with too much information on multiple topics in one post. Rather than throwing the entire “kitchen sink” (everything you know) into one post, a better strategy is to break up larger topics into focused, formatted, easy-to-digest, bite-size chunks or multiple posts and spread them out over time.
If you want people and search engines to find and focus on your post, it needs to be mono-focused and formatted correctly. For example, the topic of SEO blogging has many divergent sub-topics and if tried to cover it all in one post, most readers would do a 360 head spin and their eyeballs would fall out due to information overload. The post would also probably die a painful death in the index because search engines would be unable to acertain what the main topic of the post was about.
“Rules” about SEO Blog Post Length and Optimization
There really are no hard and fast rules about blog post length. First of all, Google loves content, so don’t be too concerned about writing “too much” in one post as long as what you are blogging about stays on-topic. With a longer post, you can break down the main topic into sub-topics, just make sure that you don’t wander off in multiple directions. If your post is about this, that and the other thing, it’s very difficult to get search engine placement for anything!
Instead of going on and on in one post, addding a list of “related posts” at the bottom of your posts gives readers the opportunity to venture further into your main topic and offers a quick navigation to previous posts they may not find otherwise. It’s also very good for SEO to link up related posts. I tend to go a bit “overboard” in the related post links department because I have written numerous posts about SEO blogging that tie in together and I want readers to find them all.
When it comes to blog post length and optimization, the general rule of thumb is one or two keywords/search terms per 450 to 500 words, not including your signature/tag line. Aim for only one keyword/search term with shorter posts. You can repeat the keyword/search term 3 times within the post including using it in a heading tag. Basically, the longer the post, the more opportunity you have for optimization, search engine placement and garnering “topic authority” for your post.
Overcoming Information Overkill with Proper SEO Blog Post Formatting
The truth is that if people are intrigued enough to read past your post title, they will first quickly scan your post before actually reading it. Therefore, you want to format your posts for easy scanning and visually compartmentalize blocks of content, a big turn off for Internet users. The use of eye-catching, optimized images, search term rich heading tags that support the main title, ordered (numbered) and unordered (bulleted) lists are effective ways to SEO format and break up blocks of content for your readers.
