Blogging about It – A Societal Trend That’s Here to Stay

Over the past several years, there has been an explosion of growth within the blogosphere and based on research and the number of blogs on the Internet, (close to 40,000 new blogs daily), blogging is a societal trend that’s here stay and steadily increasing in popularity.

There are over 145 million blogs on the Web and most blogs developed in the past couple of years are designed to make money.  According to Technorati’s statistics (since 2004, their annual study has followed the growth and trends in the blogosphere), a new blog is created every 7.4 seconds, which adds up to about 275,000 posts per day.

Technorati’s 2010 annual report stated that:

“Bloggers who get revenue from blogging are generally blogging more this year than they were last year. And 48% of all bloggers believe that more people will be getting their news and entertainment from blogs in the next five years than from the traditional media. We’ve also asked consumers about their trust and attitudes toward blogs and other media: 40% agree with bloggers’ views, and their trust in mainstream media is dropping.”

Blogging has completely changed the way businesses reach out to customers and has become the fastest way to build up one’s online business presence. Website owners are able to own search terms related to their niche market organically with the help of search engine optimization and get top placement in the index within a matter of hours, sometimes even minutes.

Top Rank Online Marketing Blog Survey

Top Rank constructed a survey to collect information on how companies are using blogs for search engine optimization purposes and what kind of impact those efforts have.

“Are blogs still important for SEO and why?

Survey Results: How important are blogs as part of a SEO strategy? The majority of respondents (90%) cited blogging as important, significantly important or a primary SEO tactic. The remaining 10% rated blogs as somewhat important or irrelevant.”

Survey results show that 87.4% of respondents “successfully increased measurable SEO objectives as a direct result of blogging“. Savvy SEO practitioners made comments like, “Absolutely. In fact, we make sure to create a small, quality cluster of blogs on different platforms and Class C IP’s to support their communications initiatives.”

From day one, Google has understood the acronym BLOG spells Better Listings On Google. This has not changed, in fact, it has only risen.  Appropriate topic-centric user-generated content still reigns supreme in the SERPs.  This is most apparent when searching a current news item or story.

Commentary Opinion Verses Investigative JournalismCommentary & Opinion Verses “Investigative Journalism”

Most blogging found on the Internet is commentary and opinion.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with blog opinion commentary, which happens to be why people enjoy reading blogs in the first place. What is important, however, is that people distinguish between the higher regarded “investigative journalism” verses opinion commentary blogging.

Just because someone has blogged about it, doesn’t make what they’re saying accurate or even true and whether a blog is considered “investigative journalism” pretty much depends on the skill level of the blogger. Reporting of “the facts” should include article sources(s), which helps give your blog and you as the blogger credibility.

Self-hosted WordPress Blogging Platform

Search engines favor blogs over standard static websites due to XML search engine communication and a lot of Internet marketers are now blogging as a significant part of their online business strategy.  Blogs are directly or indirectly responsible for millions of dollars of product and service sales every day and a lot of this has to do with the popularity of the WordPress blogging platform.

With a self-hosted WordPress blogging system, you are in control from a usability and SEO standpoint (WordPress.com, however, has it’s own rules and is another story).

WordPress SEO BloggingThat being said, WordPress can be confusing  and you do need a wee bit of training to fully take advantage of all the great features  that WordPress has to offer.

You also want your WordPress system properly configured on the baqck-end for server to search engine communication. Otherwise you are spinning your wheels and wasting your valuable time.

The bottom line is that if you have a WordPress system and you’re not seeing results in the SERPS, there is a hole in your game plan and it’s either lack of quality, engaging content, lack of optimization, poor website design (confusing navigation) back-end configuration mishaps or all of the above.
