Great blogging is akin to a great piece of music. There is a certain tonal quality, harmony and resonance present in the words we choose. It’s more than just presenting the facts, and the “rules” we learned in English Comp 101 don’t always apply to blogging.
Great blogging is a dance of words that spring forth effortlessly, touch lives, motivate and inspire others – if you let it be.
Allow Your Personality to Shine Through
The best way to grab the attention of your site visitors and ferment and own the discussion is to follow your gut instincts. Allow your personality to shine through with your words. Be real and authentic and allow yourself total permission to roll with the creative flow. The words and sentences that spring forth effortlessly and come together like a beautiful melody or song is your song and one that will truly resonate with others.
Be Real and Honest When You Blog – Nothing Less
When I blog, I try and keep it upbeat and positive, but I’m definitely not shy about sharing my point of view when my feathers get ruffled and my panties are all in a bunch. Quite frankly, personal opinion is what makes a blog a blog and why people enjoy reading them in the first place. That being said, blogging smart is not about venting your grievances or sourpuss mood in a huff and carelessly shooting ill words out through the Social Media airwaves. It is simply not smart and will ultimately bite you in the arss (PG rated for ASS) , which you will painstakingly regret once you have your wits and neutrality back. Oh, the pain of online regret – I have felt it on more than one occasion, oh yes!
Leave those Rants in Draft for a Spell until You Cool Your Heels
Leave those rants stewing in the can (draft) for a spell or at least until you’ve cooled your heels about whatever got your dander up in the first place. Remember folks, once you hit the publish or send button, it’s like throwing a brick out the window cause you can’t get it back. With the growing popularity of Social Media, words you regret writing today can spread like wild fire, linger out there and haunt you for a very very long time. Be smooth.
“Whisper words of wisdom let it be, let it be.” ~ Paul McCartney
On that musical note, don’t be afraid to be yourself when you blog, even if that means ruffling a few feathers in the process. Great blogging will often stir up the mire and shake people out of their comfort zone and that’s OK. It’s actually great. Personally, I love a great message that goes against the grain and I love a great debate as long as it remains civil, on topic and there’s no personal mudslinging. I say bring on the discussion, bring it on!
User-Generated Content, Discussion and Social Media
Comments, questions and discussion add depth and dimension to your original message and if your blogging platform is set up correctly with Social Media, you’ll know unequivocally when you’ve hit a home run with your readers because they’ll share the discussion with other like-mined people.
