Let’s put to rest several misconceptions about adding Google embedded content into your WordPress site. I have seen many “WordPress Experts” say that Google Maps, You Tube Videos and Feedburner RSS content has no real SEO value. This article is written to de-bunk those fallacies!
Why Google Maps Rock
Google Maps are an IFRAME and many so-called SEO experts say to shy away from IFRAMES. In fact, the majority will tell you that IFRAMES are not spidered by Googlebot and all of their friends. This is true to an extent, but it all depends upon “which” URL the IFRAME is linking to. If you are linking to an IFRAME that is a Google property, such as “Google Maps”, there is no way that Google doesn’t understand that the page or post you are writing isn’t about a specific local.
Think About It…….. Google considers itself the AUTHORITY on “everything.” If you are embedding a link to a specific geo-targeted area through Google Maps, you are now relating to the ultimate authority – Google. Most IFRAME results are ignored, but not when they are RELEVANT to the search. Google wants relevant results and by linking to their own maps and info, you are giving them what they want. Believe me when I tell you, Google feels it is the authority on EVERYTHING!!!!!!
Linking to and embedding Google content is a no-brainer. If you are dependent on natural or organic search engine placement, how can you NOT give Google what it wants? They wouldn’t have made it so “easy” to embed their content if they didn’t want website owners to use it!
For those of you unfamiliar with Search Engine strategies, natural placement has much different rules than Pay-Per-Click or other “keyword” driven campaigns. Organic or natural placement is based upon a broader scale, mainly topics. Google, Bing and Ask are all based upon “topic authority,” not keywords. (If you are wondering why I didn’t include Yahoo, two months ago, Bing started to serve Yahoo’s organic results).
In the real estate SEO landscape, topic authority for a specific region is of tantamount importance. Having embedded Google content to build your authority for a specific region is the best way to give your site the same authority. Linking to other authority sites such as the Mayors office, Chamber of Commerce or the city website will only add to that authority.
Google “WANTS” you to add their content to your website, which is why they made it so easy to do so. Nothing has more authority in Google’s mind, than their own properties!
Embedding Your Tube Videos and Linking To a You Tube Channel
You Tube videos are another point of contention among the “experts.” The fact is that those videos are just another IFRAME. When you embed a video, it acts the same way as a Google Map does. The best scenario is to create a You Tube Channel which will allow you to create a Google video page that will help build your authority. It is imperative to properly name the file to reflect your topics and to fill out the title, description and tags. The link from your You Tube channel to your website is a link that “carries weight in Google.”
Users of your website will love videos, that is a fact, but you need to keep in mind that Google is a computer and can’t watch the video. Google relies upon you to describe what the video is about. We like to take it a step further and teach our clients to not only post videos, but explain in text what the video is about. If you are embedding a video within your blog, it is key to add a description of what the video is about.
RSS Feeds and Feedburner
Another misconception is that your site doesn’t benefit from Feedburner, a Google property. I know that it sometimes has issues, but Feedburner’s pros outweigh the cons. Feedburner allows you to have a newsletter that goes to your subscribers. It also allows users to add YOUR content to their Google home page. It is pretty easy to also add your RSS content on your website. This is important if you have more than one website. If you have multiple websites, using Feedburner to tie them together is a solid SEO play. We have had major success using Feedburner across multiple domains.
