With all the Web 2.0 technologies available that rely on JavaScript in the form of AJAX (shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML – a group of interrelated web development methods used to create interactive web applications), it’s important to know whether javascript is having any positive impact on your SEO.
Well, the answer is no. Google and the other search engines are not seeing AJAX, although that might change down the road, and this also applies to maps wrapped in Javascript.
Have Your Cake (Fancy Map) and Eat it Too (Google Embedded Map)
Hence the reason why you should avoid using too much javascript on your website. That being said, there are some great WordPress map plugins (I’m not going to advertise what plugins I am referring to) that are bundled with market reports, local school info and other geo-targeted statistics as well as other javascript wrapped maps available out there.
These fancier interactive maps and plugins add eye candy and enhance the look of your site. However, unlike Google embedded maps, they are basically worthless in the geo-targeted SEO department.
Well, a few great minds (me included of course) in the ActiveRain community came up with a fix for SEO when using maps wrapped in javascript. All you have to is insert a Google map below the javascript map and allow the iframe to disappear, so that only the “view larger map” link appears.
Basically, you can have your cool eye candy javascript map and all the geo-targeted SEO benefits of the embedded Google map at the same time. You see, it’s not actually the iframe of the Google map link that gives you the geo-targeted SEO, it’s the rest of the code within the link.
Even if the map disappears off the page (iframe), you are still reaping the SEO benefits. And since most of you already know that embedded Google maps revert to a link if you so much as breathe on them, this won’t be hard to do.
So, if you find a super, tricked-out map or cool, user-friendly WordPress map bundle plugin wrapped in javascript, you now have the fix for geo-targeted SEO. Thanks for the tips and emails – I finally figured out how to get the html code for Google maps that I made in MyMaps – don’t know why, but I have to get the link, then log out of Google, use the link to get to the map, then I can get the embed code. Somehow, I think I am making this too hard. 🙁
But it does work!
