Geo-targeted area profile pages that include embedded Google Maps are the foundation pages for area authority and deep link navigation SEO, no matter what industry or market you are targeting.
Why embed the iframe of a Google map? Embedding the iframe into a page helps Google ascertain what area the page is about.
Aren’t there plugins for that? Sometimes, the easy way isn’t the best way. Plugins use a different type of scripting agent such as AJAX. Search engines can not read this. Other plugins use Flash. Search engines can not watch a movie. Utilizing an iframe means that you are literally pulling data from Google.com. How can that be wrong?
Geo-targeted Area Profile Pages with Google Maps
When I create a SEO website content plan for a new website or take over the SEO content writing for an existing website, I always start with geo-targeted area profile pages that include embedded Google Maps. I do this for two reasons. First of all, it helps me get familiar with the locale I am writing about, since I write for a variety of markets across the nation. Most importantly, area profile pages build website area authority and should be linked back to from other pages AND posts whenever possible. Since they are foundation pages, they need to be written first.
For practicality sake, you want to start off with a comprehensive geo-targeting plan for the different areas you want to focus on. For example, if your website is about real estate in the Greater Puget Sound/Seattle Area, you might want to have geo-targeted pages with embedded Google maps for each city within a 20 mile radius of Seattle. Here is an example of an area profile page with an embedded Google map for Seattle, WA. With geo-targeting, you can get as granular as you want or reach out as far and wide as you want.
Embedding Google Maps into Blog Posts
By embedding Google Maps into your blog posts, you create area authority for the topics you write about. You can build up even more area authority by linking back to corresponding area profile pages on your website. This not only helps the search engine placement of your posts, it increases the overall area authority and deep link navigation SEO of your entire website.
The use of embedded Google maps goes hand-in-hand with your Google Places account, which gets your business on the Google Map – another post for another day!
How to Embed a Google Map into a Page
Embedding a Google map into html is easy as pie and is basically the same as embedding the iframe of a YouTube video and most IDX solutions. Here are a few tips about embedding Google maps that will make the task even easier:
- First of all, make sure that all of your edits are done on your page BEFORE inserting a Google map or the map will revert to a link and disappear on your page. If that happens, you will need to re-insert the iframe. I have found that if you make edits while in html/source view and update before previewing the page, the map stays put.
- Another tip is to name the map with an h2 or h3 heading tag. Ex: Map of Seattle, WA. Naming the map might seem unnecessary for humans, but it eliminates potential formatting issues and is good for SEO. If you choose not to use a heading tag to name the map, you’ll probably need to add an opening and closing paragraph tag around the iframe so the map doesn’t butt up against text.
Step-by-step Instructions:
- Click on Google Maps to open up the search box
- Type in the area you want to geo-target into the search box. You can search by country, state, city, county, zip code, multiple zip codes or unique street address.
- The map will open and in the upper right corner you will see a link button. Click on the Link and copy the iframe code from “Paste HTML to embed in website.”
- Open the html view of your page and scroll down until you find the place where you want the iframe of the map inserted. Note: This part can be a little bit tricky because in html view, the page has a tendency to jump up, so don’t get frustrated – it may take you several tries. Scroll back down and insert the map iframe and make sure that you update or save BEFORE leaving html view.
- You should now see an interactive Google map on your page. If for some reason you only see a link to the map, go back into html/source view and re-enter the iframe.
Copy, paste and voilà, you’re done! It’s really that simple.
